Education and Outreach

Our outreach training provides an overview of fair housing, with emphasis on legal rights, protected classes, and enforcement. We begin with an overview of the Fair Housing Act, other civil rights legislation, and state and local laws. Our training goes into detail regarding the types of properties that are covered under these laws, as well as the different protected classes: race, color, gender, religion, familial status, disability and national origin (and within the City of Pittsburgh ancestry, sexual orientation and gender identity).

Building from this, we discuss enforcement issues, including what to do if you are a victim of housing discrimination and the role of private fair housing organizations, such as the Fair Housing Partnership, in this process. Finally, our program covers disability discrimination in housing, and explains reasonable modifications and accommodations.

The training is offered in either an abbreviated one hour format or an extended three hour session, and can be offered as a part of your organization’s weekly/monthly meeting.
